Hi all,

As you know, for those who have been in exit path for 2 years or above, that summer holiday is likely to be our most active time throughout the whole year. Usually some old players will be active and there will be a lot of new players joining that would potentially become active members.

Let's not be over-optimistic, this community won't last forever. So what I am reckoned is that this community will not last forever as the influence of this game is fading slowly without advertising and the fact that this is a private community. I am not here to discuss whether we shall make this community become public, which would be a later thing to discuss I suppose ( frankly I have no comment about it). However, this post is gonna discuss about how to increase our chance recruiting active players.

In order to recruit new players, we shall gave them impression that there are fun levels around here. Recently I have exposed to some game design thingys from a rare occasion. Therefore here would be our suggestion.

Tutorials are key to educate new players to acquire new skills. However I recently rethink about it and found it is too informative. Hence, what I am thinking is we shall blend some dynamic element inside it. For example, there are couple skills in tutorial #1, we can further break them down into serval levels and each of them also add things like axes or whatever to not only enhancing the effect of the tutorial level, but also making them enjoy themselves.

Due to my heavy burden in academics I am not able to make any levels in this very stage, I will post further information about it in the distant future prob around late June

Please express your ideas, DO NOT COMMENT SOMETHING LIKE I AGREE AND ITS REASON, THIS IS NOT THE POINT OF THIS DISCUSSION.

Well, from your first tutorial (which i use on every new person that i recruit) i see how you can break some things down. Like, as soon as you enter the teleported to that really weird backwards jump, most new people cannot beat that part and take a very long time to do it. So I was thinking that making a level just to teach them how to do that jump would be good. Like, start with a simple one (kind of like a small wall jump). Then start taking the walls further apart until it is around the same distance as in dragons 1st tutorial.

Another thing that i see can be broken down is the wall jumps. Malkoir has done an amazing job at it, and i think doing a very remedial breakdown of wall jumps will help us in the long run with new players. Since wall jumps are very crucial to play many fun levels, a basic tutorial for one would be great. Maybe add a few things like the spikes that come down and up (and you have to time the jumps) or certain spots have a laser so you have to be quick with your exit path instincts.

Also, many new players (i know i did) probably think that all the levels are tutorials and are boring and the fun levels are no where to be found. Well, maybe a tutorial with just the fun and cool basic things so the new people will be like (WOW, this is so cool.) and they will be more inclined to stay and see the truly fun levels that await them. Like, a tutorial where you use the skywalker trick, that no name spam up the wall trick, and sticking / hopping. the sticking will really get them excited to see what ep has in store.

Lastly, i think that if we showed the new players infinite flow, they would get excited and want to stay. Maybe we should create a tutorial where they learn to somewhat control the flow, in an easy and fun way. Like, use lasers and basic obstacles or those spikes that are triggered when you get in their range, and can fall on you and pop back up. Show them that we can have fun here, and that after the tutorials, the world is your oyster.

I know this isn't part of the discussion, but I will start on a new tutorial series that is more fun for newer players (so other people don't do the same thing as me).

It would be like (as i am drafting in my head... wait... I am making levels again :O anyways...) first part the skills itself. After 1-2 repetition then it would be variation of the skills itself only.

I am still considering about infinite flow though. New players can learn skills easily but they should not rely on it. So I think only advanced skill can put inf flow. (or levels dedicated to difficult variation of basic skills)

A new year, a new start, a new tutorial series Empty Re: A new year, a new start, a new tutorial series

Post by Retrocrystallix Sun Mar 02, 2014 6:52 pm

If you decide to create a new tutorials series, please leave the old ones on the forums! :DEven though you may see them as too informative, they still can be quite useful to presenting a new player with new techniques and the such... (The intermediate tut w/ FCs, triples, and troppos does an excellent job at explaining these).

And getting people to "stick around" in Y-ep.... That almost feels like it's cheating them into staying. :/ If they want to stick around, it should be their choice and based on their own experiences - not of something that is designed to intrigue them...
What happens after they realize that it was just a method to entice them?

... Third point I've got relates back to the informativeness of the tuts... A lot of times, newer members ask the more experienced ones for help and the such with this and that, and I'm ALL FOR THAT OMGSOHAPPY >Very Happy It's one of the aspects here that people, willingly, will take their time out of their brief moments on Y-ep to show a newer player a technique. :3 The tutorials are a good basis for this --- You can elaborate more if needed, and to actually see them try the new techniques allows you to give real-time feedback.... However, without the tuts themselves, it'd be difficult to have the same effect.

Now, fun levels. If you want them to try fun levels, I know that there's a stickied post labeled "Levels for new Y-ep players" ... And also, lots of you more experienced peps know most of these levels pretty well... I'm sure you all can find ones that can be fun, but don't demand lots of skill.

A last thought --- What may be seemingly old and boring to you can be incredibly fun to the newer members. For example, I was playing a map that had infinite flow and a newer member was initially enticed by not the level, but by the fact THAT IT HAD INFINITE FLOW. Jesus, when I first found out about infinite flow I fell off my chair! It sped up practice and the time for level, and it was pretty cool to just run around w/ flow indefinitely ... :3
The fact is, many levels we've lost enjoyment in may prove to be entertaining to others... It just takes a small step in order to see Y-ep through the eyes of the newer player, as opposed to yourself Wink

Gotta say, 6 months makes me seem so old..... Dx Can't wait to see what the spring and summer will bring. :3

I can add some occasion infinite flow level between the series hehe.

The idea of the new level is not to cheat them to stay but to also act as a showcase to present what this community has. The level for new player is undeniable an excellent post but we can do it better by blending it with tutorials.

The psychological expansion for why this is better can be referred in my extra reference. There are difference between seperating levels and blending these genres together.

Btw OZ made me think that we can also teach them some other things rather then pure skills. I'll figure out it later after exams

Another idea i had was to make an extremely easy level where you have super basic skills that show new players how a custom level can be fun. Like, you make jumps that have 2 blocks, and you make it go high, or low, and add like an easy late corner and just show them some super basic skills. Just like an essay, you need to get the reader hooked to make them keep reading, thats like exit path. You have to show the new person something amazing, to make them a trustworthy, and long-time player.

Yes. i see where you are coming from, since some people have difficulty on maybe one skill set and have to play an entire tutorial just to get to one small section for their help. So you just want to break apart todays tutorials and make a tutorial on each skill set so we can help a new player with their difficulties? i like it. Maybe learning not so much in one tutorial will prove helpful to the new players so they do not freak out when they have to learn about 10 skills. If / When this happens, i think it will prove very beneficial to all the new players of exit path to come.
